Official Guide to the Hot 50 Morgan Dollar Varieties
In response to collector demand for more new premium varieties, and as a result of the success of the Top 100, Oxman wrote the Hot 50. The Hot 50 contained 50 exciting new varieties that supplement the Top 100. Advanced Morgan dollar collectors now have even more to look for when searching through silver dollars at coin shops and shows. Do you have any Hot 50 coins in your collection? Did you know that if you have an 1889 VAM 23A in your collection in any grade, it would be the second specimen known! And, it would be worth a small fortune. This book will pay for itself many times over with your first few purchases.

If we were on a set of stairs, this would be the work found about three steps up. In 1963, a young Berkley engineering student from Los Banos, California came across a privately published booklet entitled, Die Varieties of Morgan Silver Dollars, by Francis X. Klaes. It consisted of 26 pages and 58 photographs. That student, Leroy Van Allen, later teamed with A. George Mallis for the release of the first VAM book. A Guide to Morgan and Peace Dollars in 1971. Five years later with hundreds of new discoveries, the expanded VAM guide was published, The Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars.

In 1996, Oxman and Michael S. Fey introduced The Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties: The VAM Keys. At the time of publication, there were 2,000 plus know varieties. The TOP 100 focused on 100 coins that the authors believed should be collected.

In 2000, Oxman followed up with this book; his choice of coins that should be collected along with the TOP 100. While the HOT 50 list has been expanded with the discovery of new stages of known coins and new coins with the same types of identification as other coins, but with differences, this book is a must for starting and understanding the HOT 50.
