The first year of the Morgan Dollar - 1878 - produced at least four different reverses and tons of die marriages. This book identifies the 42 known VAMs from 1878 with the last reverse, the Reverse of 1879. The book is written by Mark Witkower, who has been involved in variety collection for more than 20 years. His work, reviewed and aided by Leroy Van Allen and Jeff Oxman, is the result of more than two years of intense study of the last minting of Morgan's in 1878.

The book covers all of the different varieties, including several identified by Witkower's research and accepted by Van Allen in 2009.
