So you want to collect 1878 Morgan Dollars

The first year of issue of the Morgan Silver Dollars creates a collecting challenge that will not be completed without years of effort. There is no known complete collection of the recognized varieties that have been identified out of the Philadelphia mint. These coins were created in the inaugural year of the so-called Bland dollar, named after Representative Richard P. Bland who forced through Congress in 1877 the "sound money" doctrines, which resulted in the purchase of 291,272,018.56 ounces of fine silver and the coinage of what would later be known as THE MORGAN DOLLAR.

The following is a checklist of just the coins from the Philadelphia mint that can be used for the currently known varieties and the highest grade that any third-party grading company is reporting in its latest Population Report as of June 2008.

A '?' in the TOP GRADE column means there are no slabbed coins with that VAM number reported in any Population Guide. That doesn’t mean a coin has not been slabbed by one of the major companies, it just means it has not been recognized by them and put in their guide.

There were more than 10 million dollars minted at Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Carson City in 1878.
