Reverse B2a - Normal die with center of die over polished resulting in top ray missing under eagle?s tail feathers and some rays shortened away from the lower wing edge.

The VAM-5 has a polished reverse that has removed a ray from below the eagle's tail.

To maintain the dies, die polishing by Mint personnel was a common procedure for Peace dollars, as it was for the earlier Morgan dollar series. Die polishing lines of various kinds, weak lettering and missing areas of the design are all the unintended product of over-polishing. Normally there would be little, if any, premium associated with such effects. But when the polishing is of the magnitude that an entire design feature is missing, then this is a horse of a different color. On the VAM 5, the top ray behind the eagle?s leg feathers is gone without a trace, and for this reason, the VAM 5 was selected to be part of the TOP 50. Collectors find the "Missing Ray" variety quite interesting, but a diligent searching is apt to easily locate a specimen.
