1A II 1 ? B1a (Die Gouge in Rays) I-3 R-4

Obverse II 1? Horizontal die gouge in rays below B of LIBERTY.

Reverse B1a - Normal die

Two die cracks also help with attributing the VAM-1A. One runs from the top left of the rays down through the right edge of the gouge. The other runs from the neck to the '1' and also splits off between the '1' and '9'.

AU-58 - PCGS

The first reverse design used in 1922 was designated the B-1 reverse, which can easily be distinguished from the later B-2 reverse by the fact that the stem of the olive branch on the B-1 is disconnected from the eagle?s talon. The stem on the B-2 reverse does not show this easily visible gap. The key diagnostic feature of the VAM 1A is the prominent die gouge in Liberty?s tiara on the obverse, which runs along the base of the rays in Liberty?s tiara. The VAM 1A is not considered a major rarity, but it is surprisingly hard to find in high uncirculated grades.
