In 1903, the date and mint mark were hand punched into the dies by the mint workers. Hammers and puches were used to get the dies ready for production at each of the mints. This rare coin has a small mint mark on the lower reverse that most experts believe was intended to be used on the 1903 quarter. The 1903-S is a costly coin to begin with, but add this micro S and the price jumps considerably. VAM-2 coins are very hard to find, especially in EF and above.
