This Guide identifies those collectors that reported each of the 1889 P doubled ear die varieties. The possible causes of the many doubled ear varieties on dies is explored. A separate section lists and illustrates the key identifiers for each die variety as an aid for the quick attribution of the 27 doubled ear varieties. Additional sections of this Guide provide the descriptive listing of each die variety and photographs for each die variety.

When the book was first published in October 2002 and revised in January 2009, it was based upon revised and new doubled ear variety descriptions that were primarily based on Logan McKechnie's submittal of coins for examination which resulted in several new varieties. There were revisions on most of the known doubled ears of 1889, including those listed in Jeff Oxman's HOT 50 list, and seven new varieties. Since that time, the 1889 list has grown to encompass 31 coins, [VAM 44, a double ear, was left out of the book by accident.]

This book is one of the best books ever produced by Leroy Van Allen in its ease to identify the coins.
