In 1879 the San Francisco mint created Morgan dollars with two different reverses. Most coins were produced with a new reverse design that had a slanted arrow feather where the feathers angled toward the shaft. A smaller number were created with the older reverse die used from 1878 that has parallel arrow feathers sometimes abbreviated as PAF. These coins are also sometimes abbreviated 79-S Reverse of 78 or even 79S Rev 78.
With two new discoveries in 2007, there are now nineteen different VAMs assigned for the 1878-9-S with the Reverse of 78. VAMs 4, 6, 9, 23, 25, 34, 34A, 34B, 35, 39, 42, 43, 46, 50, 51, 52, 56, 66, and 67. |
