Obverse II 21? Eyelid slightly tripled in front of eye just below front of eyelid. Point of fourth right star broken. Die chip at mouth corner.
Reverse B2ah? Feather engraved between eagle?s right wing and leg extending up between wing and body to top of wing with dots on surface. A long continuous touched-up engraved area. Heavy polishing lines in fields. Small III S mint mark centered and tilted left. R in Trust not broken.

Amazing tripled eyelid obverse shared with unique "Molten Lava" reverse. Reported as quite rare by the foremost 1878-S expert. 1878-S Morgans have some astounding varieties on the eagles wing feathers, but the VAM-50 may top them all.

The tripled eyelid obverse is shared with VAM-76, but is not as interesting as VAM-50. The reverse has a series of surface dots which, with a little imagination, looks like a flow of lava. Larry Briggs has searched tens of thousands of 1878-s coins and found only two VAM-50's and one VAM-76 (which was a discovery piece at the time).

As with many 1878-S VAMs, engraved wing feathers are a key to identification of the VAM. The VAM-50 is one of four "funky feathers," called the crudest and most spectacular feathers of all the Morgan dies in the attribution guide, they have smooth surfaces and rough sides or smooth sides and rough surfaces: VAM-49, VAM-50, VAM-76 and VAM-81.
